Graphic Design Foundations

Assessment Briefs   T1 2025

General information

This document contains briefs for both assessment tasks in this course. All submission material must be submitted PRIOR to the start time of your tutorial in the week it is due, and please note that no templates of any form. can be used in your submissions. AI tools may only be used as one of many tools in your concept phase, and must be documented.

Visual Diary and Concept Statements for Assessments 1 & 2

Concept Statements and Visual Diary extracts are to be submitted for both assessment tasks, and must be submitted as evidence of your thinking process and engagement with the course material.

The visual diary extract demonstrates your creative process that led to your final designs for each assessment. The diary  is an important thinking tool, and evidence of your idea development and drafts/prototyping. It should include thumbnails, rough sketches, annotated images, notes about the brief, doodles and so on. A plain A4 diary is recommended so you can “think with your pencil” with enough page space, although the exact one you choose is up to you. Digital submission of relevant visual diary pages can be as simple as smart phone images collated at the end of your PDF.

The concept statement is a short piece of academic writing (500-600 words) that should have a recognisable structure   (eg. introduction, justification of 2-3 design decisions, short conclusion), and must refer to at least two academic sources  from the course readings. It should demonstrate your engagement with the theories and techniques found in the lectures and readings, and application of some of them in your final design. Either Harvard or APA referencing styles are accepted. Digital submission of concept statement must be in PDF format if submitted separately.

Assessment Task 1: Visual Identity Design

Due: Week 3+5

Week 3: Digital Submission of mid-point progress: A4 PDF + oral presentation (20MB limit)

Week 5: Digital Submission of A4 Style. Guide PDF + Visual Diary / Concept Statement (20MB limit)

Weight: 40%

Overview

This assignment introduces principles of visual identity and branding design, and the production of “Style Guides” as used in  the graphic design profession. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the creation of visual identities using a range of media,   and to consider colour, typography, image and layout. The aim is for you to examine rules and theory for good identity design structure and make informed decisions on the ways that you apply those theories. A selection of these decisions will then be outlined in your Concept Statement. The design of the ‘Style. Guide’ itself is also part of the assessment.

Brief

1. Develop a visual identity for an organisation that is socially engaged or community-based and aligns with at least one UN  Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), chosen by you and approved by your tutor. This could include co-share spaces, charities, not-for-profits (NFPs), aid organisations, local sporting groups, innovative start-ups, smaller community groups and so on.

You are to use target audience research and concept generation techniques to develop a visual identity (and new name if required) for the organization you have chosen. Each decision you make, whether it be naming, design, or image development  should be with a view to connecting the organisation with that target audience/s. Document your workings in your visual diary, and be prepared to discuss your design decisions in your concept statement.

The visual identity must include a symbol, text elements (eg the name, and potentially a sub-title or slogan), and a colour   scheme that develops with reference to course theory. The identity must be recognizable and legible at both a small scale (ie a business card, and an app icon) and at a large scale (for example used in advertising on a vehicle or in building environment signage).

2. Produce a Style Guide that demonstrates the visual identity and its applications in various different contexts. Minimum style. guide contents are as follows:

Visual Identity (logo) 6 versions :

For light backgrounds

• Mono (black and white only, no grey)

• Colour (CMYK)

• Greyscale

For dark backgrounds

• Mono reversed (black and white only, no grey)

• Colour reversed (CMYK)

• Greyscale reversed

Typeface page containing all typefaces used in visual identity 》 Colour page (RGB, CMYK, PMS)

Business card design example (front and back)

Small scale application (eg. App as Icon shown at actual size)

Large scale developed design (truck advertising, billboard etc).

Refer to the NASA Style. guide for what an identity style. guide might look like, as well as recommended readings on the list such as “Graphic Design, Australian Style. Manual” (especially for colour theory). An understanding of symbols and semiotics will help describe your work. No templates or online platforms (such as Canva) are permitted.

Assessment Task 2: Cultural Event Promotional Graphics

Due: Week 11

Week 11: Digital submission of A4 PDF + Visual Diary & Concept Statement PDF (20MB limit)

Digital submission of packaged Indesign file (brochure and 3 x posters)

Digital submission of web banner file (720 x 300px @72dpi, .gif, .png or .jpg) Oral presentation of final design with folded brochure and 3 printed posters

Weight: 60%

Overview

In Assessment Task 2 we engage with the dynamic world of event branding, with a focus on the role of image in partnership with typography. The project requires developing deeper understanding of target audiences, development and refinement of image(s) you create for your selected event, colour schemes, and the relationship of your image and typography in the composition of the designs. An additional consideration is design flexibility—how the brand language that you are creating can adapt to a range of different media formats for different target audiences.

The project provides opportunities for the expansion of a single event design to a range of posters, online advertising, and a hand-held brochure where interesting cuts and/or folds could also contribute to the design style and narrative.

Brief

Design promotional event material for one of the following three events/festivals, or a socially-aware / SDG-aligned event/festival of your choosing. This means one that raises awareness of, or contributes to a social or cultural issue rather than a commercial one. For example, events/Festivals that support or promote the arts (eg theatre, ballet), the Black Lives Matter  movement, campaigns and events centred on climate change, water security, libraries and reading, mental wellbeing, human rights, ocean health, bike riding, LGBTIQA+ issues, campaigns against violence, war and so on.

Festival of Dangerous Ideas 2026

Client: The Ethics Centre use any of the events from the 2024 Program: https://festivalofdangerousideas.com/program/ 》 Earth Hour Australia 2025

Client: World Wildlife Federation Australia (WWF) use any of the events found here: https://www.earthhour.org.au/ and also take a look at the Earth Hour Handbook 23 uploaded to the Assessment Brief Resources folder on Moodle.

》 Sydney Open 2025

Client: Sydney Living Museums use any of the events from 2023 or 2024 found here: https://www.sydneyopen.com.au/ Social/Cultural event of your choosing

Your overall event or festival, at least two single events must align with at least one UN SDG and be approved by your tutor.

The project commences with your research into your selected client/issue and the event/festival, generating and prototyping ideas (visual research), and developing a compelling typographic and image campaign. This campaign identity will be applied to the A3   poster, adapted for the brochure cover, and potentially the web banner.

You will build on the overall event/festival identity and brand language to produce A4 posters for two different single events (for example, a tour, talk, show, park picnic, kids event, or an exhibition). This will also help with content for the brochure, and potentially your web banner. Your final event design will be applied as a minimum to the following contexts:

1 x A3 poster featuring the overall identity of the event/festival

2 x A4 posters featuring single events (eg two different FODI events, Earth Hour events or different tours with Sydney Open)

A promotional brochure with that includes a listing of every individual event within the Festival, folded to a smaller and more portable format of your choosing from a double sided A3 sheet, that will fit into a standard A6 or DL envelope. (you may use placeholder text)

A 72dpi web banner measuring 720px wide x 300px high which carries the key brand language and supporting information of the campaign.

》 1 x A4 Landscape PDF Portfolio with at least one page for each poster,  brochure, and web banner, plus your concept statement and visual diary.

A packaged Indesign file of the 3 posters and the brochure (your tutor will demonstrate how to produce this file).

As per the Course Outline, you will present your A4 PDF portfolio as slides during the final online tutorial in week 11, with a time limit. Your concept statement, visual diary, and Indesign files are not required for the oral presentation, only your visual designs.

Brochure mock-ups and poster prints are to be displayed in the tutorial room and submitted during the presentation for grading in week 11.
