Tutorial Week 11 20018, 2025.

Intermolecular Forces and Materials Chemistry.

1.  What is the relationship between the Faraday, the Coulomb, and Avogadro’s number?

2.  What is the difference between Volts (V) and electron Volts (eV)?

3.  (a) Write down Coulomb’s Law in terms of (i) the energy of interaction (U) between two ions of algebraic charges z1 and z2 at distance r and (ii) the   forces between the ions (in a vacuum).

(b) Hence, calculate the interaction energy (U) of a Na+ ion and a Cl- ion if they are initially separated by 0.2 nm (in a vacuum).

(c) Calculate the same interaction energy (U) in water (dielectric constant εr = 78.5) and in oil (dielectric constant εr = 2.0)

(d) What trend do you expect for the solubility of the salts LiCl, NaCl, KCl, RbCl, CsCl?

(e) What trend do you expect in salt solubility in the following series if we assume all ions have the same radius? KCl, MgSO4, AlPO4, Al2(SO4)3, MgCl2?

4.  (a) What is the magnitude of the electric field due to a Mg2+ ion at a distance of 0.2 nm (in a vacuum)

5.  (a) Name the three types of secondary bonding interactions, which give a 1/r6 distance dependence.

(b) Sketch the famous Lennard-Jones (12-6) potential:

(c) Determine the equilibrium bond length, ro, in terms of A and B
