Tutorial # 4 (week of Nov 17th) – Environmental Health
Please carry out these two activities in preparation for discussions during tutorial, and submit the results in the Tutorial 4 assignment link on Quercus before noon on the day of your tutorial.
Part I: Personal Care Products Exposure to Chemicals of Concern
Prepare a list of the cosmetics and personal care products you use on a weekly basis. Typically this can include toothpaste, soap, shampoo, conditioner, moisturizers, deodorant, cosmetics, etc...
For each product, review the ingredients list (if available) and identify whether it contains any of the chemicals listed below.
. BHA and BHT
. Coal tar dyes: look for P-Phenyl-enediamine and colours identified as “C.I.” followed by five digits
. Cyclomethicone and siloxanes
. DEA, MEA, and TEA
. Dibutyl Phthalate
. Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives: look for DMDM Hydantoin, diazolidinyl Urea, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Methenamine, or Quarteruium-15
. Parabens
. Parfum
. PEG
. Petrolatum
. Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
. Triclosan
