Research Proposal Guidelines

Objective

Each group is required to submit a research proposal (3-4 pages) outlining their proposed research project. The proposal should clearly articulate the research problem, objectives, mel thodology, and expected outcomes. It wil1 serve as a blueprint for your project and is a reql uired step toward receiving approval to proceed with your research.

Detailed Instructions for Each Section

1. Title (1-2 lines)

Choose a clear, specific, and informative title that captures the essence of your research topic. Where applicable, mention the context, population, or methodology (e.g., "A Panel Dat a Analysis of Financial Inclusion in Rural India").

2. Introduction (1-2 paragraphs)

Introduce your topic and provide necessary background.

Define the research problem and explain its academic and/or practical significance.

State the main purpose of your study.

Briefly preview the structure of your proposal.

3. Literature Review (1-1.5 pages)

Summarize relevant academic research and theoretical frameworks related to your topic.

Discuss at least 4-5 academic papers, focusing on their findings, methodologies, and relevance to your project.

Highlight key debates, trends, and gaps in the literature.

Clearly state how your proposed study contributes to or extends the existing literature.

Use credible academic sources, cited using APA style.

4. Research Objectives and Questions/Hypotheses (1/2 page)

Clearly define your primary and secondary objectives.

State one or more research questions and/or testable hypotheses, ensuring they are specific and measurable.

5. Methodology (1.5-2 pages)

This is the core of your proposal. It should be data-driven, precise, and feasible.

5.1 Data Description

Describe the dataset you plan to use:

- Source (e.g., World Bank, survey, experimental data)

- Structure (cross-sectional, panel, time-series)

- Coverage (time period, geography, unit of observation)

- Key variables and how they are constructed

5.2 Descriptive Statistics

Include 1-2 tables presenting summary statistics (mean, standard deviation, min/max, etc.) for key variables.

Tables may include group comparisons or trends where relevant.

5.3 Empirical Strategy and Baseline Results

Explain your empirical model and the rationale for using it (e.g., OLS, fixed effects, probi t).

Define the dependent, independent, and control variables.

Present 1-2 baseline regression tables to demonstrate feasibility. These can be preliminary or illustrative but must reflect a serious start to your analysis.

6. Expected Outcomes and Impact (1-2 paragraphs)

Outline the potential findings of your research.

Explain the contribution your study may make to the literature, policy, or practice.

Briefly discuss limitations and possible future directions.

7. References

Include al1 sources cited in your proposal.

Use APA style. consistently throughout.

Format: Typed, professional formatting, 11-12 pt font, 1.5 or double spacing

Evaluation Criteria

Your proposal wil1 be evaluated based on:

- Clarity and relevance of the research question and objectives

- Depth and quality of the literature review, including summary of at least 4-5 academic pa pers

- Detail and feasibility of the methodology

- Quality of data description

- Inclusion of descriptive statistics Coherence of empirical strategy and regression results

- Anticipated outcomes and potential impact

- Overal1 organization, clarity, and proper citation formatting
