Exam Questions
1. Compare and contrast Marx and Durkheim's theories of social change. How are they related? How do they differ? What does each theorist say about the division of labor? Finally, which theory do vou agree with the most? Why?
2. What is alienation, according to Marx, and what causes it? Is it an individual (or, psychological) condition or a structural one? Then, pretending you are Marx, pick one job-either your own or a hypothetical one-and analyze the four types of alienation present within it. Finally, discuss whether or not it is possible to overcome alienation within the job, according to Marx.
3. What do you think about the concept of McDonaldization? Provide two (2) examples where the theory fits and explain why it fits. Be very explicit. Provide one (1) example where the theory doesn't fit, and again, explain why. For full points you will first define McDonaldization and directly link it to to Weber's social thought before you start locating it in our social world.
