ISSUES, RISK AND CRISIS COMMUNICATION

Assignment 1

You will identify and independently research an organisational issue within the past 5 years where there is a strong focus on communication, which has been described in an academic journal or textbook.

This is not about crisis communication-this is about an issue that is relevant to the organisation and its stakeholders and how it was communicated.

Referring to other academic sources, and also drawing on non-academic sources (such as media reports) you will discuss:

the organisation

the issue

the importance and priority of this issue for the organisation, giving reasons

how the organisation communicated about the issue

at least two stakeholder groups the organisation communicated with about the issue, and why

communication tactics, channels and messages;

your personal assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the issue communication in the case (critique of the case)

Your discussion should refer to scholarly concepts covered in this course, referencing them as appropriate. You may use references provided; you should also do your own research.

Your report will be comprise 1,200 words of text (+/-10%), with at least eight references (not included in the word count) of which at least are four scholarly references (including the text the case is drawn from)

Good writing and correct grammar, spelling and referencing are important, and as this is an academic essay, bullet points or lists are strongly discouraged

Your report should adhere to a framework similar to this:

introduce organisation and issue

the relevance and priority of this issue for the organisation, giving reasons

introduction of stakeholders

examination of strategy in managing/communicating the issue, including communication tactics, channels and messages

assessment of what was done well and not so well - with reasons provided.

Adhere to APA7 referencing guidelines.

Assignment 1 Marking Criteria

Explanation and identification of the organisation, the issue, and an examination of strategy in managing/communicating the issue to at least 2 stakeholder groups (includes clarity of writing and assessment structure as set out on Canvas) (10 m)

Selection and use of relevant information and appropriate theoretical frameworks to investigate and support your point of view and conclusion (includes correct referencing of sources) (13 m)

Conclusions and related outcomes (implications and consequences) Your personal assessment of what was done well and not so well - with reasons provided. (12 m)
