"Optical Sensor for Temperature Measurement"
1. Background
You have recently been appointed as an instrument engineer for a medium-sized instrument company. You report directly to the Technical Director (TD). This company is an engineering technology solution provider with expertise in physical measurement. They offer solutions for temperature measurement in various industries. Over the past 30 years, the company has been using the same type of technology, mainly relying on traditional sensors. Recently, the company has received some inquiries from customers regarding fiber optic sensors for distributed distributed measurement.
2. Meet with the technical director (your task)
After attending the company's board meeting, TD informed you that the general manager has proposed the possibility of developing a series of new products based on fiber optic sensing technology. As a new member of the team and a graduate from a prestigious university, TD asked you to study the feasibility of including these products as part of the company's investment portfolio.
TD informs you that for the next board meeting (which will be held in one month), a preliminary report needs to be submitted. This report will assist the board in determining future plans. It should include a summary table listing different types of traditional temperature sensors, explain their working principles in your own words, and provide some examples for each sensor type.
Then, the report should focus on conducting a more detailed review of the existing various commercial optical fiber sensors and their current applications in different industries/fields (as required below), followed by forward-looking suggestions for other potential industries. Please note that this must be supported by appropriate references for adequate justification.
