Note: Assignment 5 builds on Assignment 4

· In Assignment 5, you will write a persuasive essay on the topic you debated in Assignment 4.

· Like the debate, your purpose is to persuade others to agree with your argument.

· Unlike the debate, you can choose which side you argue for – or introduce a new perspective to the topic. You can and should develop your own thesis on the topic.

· You can and should use the sources you gathered for your Annotated Bibliography to support your argument. You should also do more research to find sources that support your unique thesis.

Assignment 5: Develop a persuasive argument and express your own perspective on the topic your team debated in Assignment 4.

Grading Criteria

See grading rubric below for more details.

1. Argument: The paper defines the issue, provides appropriate background or context, and expresses the author’s perspective on the Assignment 4 Debate Topic. Its thesis is specific, precise, arguable, demonstrable, assertive, and self-confident. (40%)

2. Rhetoric: The paper uses rhetorical appeals (ethos, logos, pathos) and takes into account at least two sides of a debatable issue. (30%)

3. References: Claims are supported with evidence, examples, quotations, citations, in APA format. You should use sources you found during Assignment 4 – and additional evidence, as needed. (10%)

4. APA Format: 12-point font, double-spaced,title page, page numbers, references, etc. (10%)

5. Editing: Correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and syntax; appropriate style. & tone for an educated reader. (10%)

Due: Sunday of Unit 10. Late penalty = 5%/day.

Length: 2000 words.

Worth: 20% of final grade
