A. Critically engage with a range of city films

B. Reflect on the cinematic representation of various urban phenomena

Presentation

You are asked to video record a 8-10 minutes long oral presentation. Your presentation should demonstrate your critical engagement with the city films in the first six weeks of the semester and with the cinematic representation of various themes related to the urban experiences. The films you choose must be from those uploaded to LMO for each week or from the additional films that are discussed in the lectures in the first six weeks. Even if your presentation focuses on one/two film(s), you could also include other films mentioned in the first six weeks to support your argument.

You can address general themes such as:

· The representation of racialised spaces;

· The representation of postcolonial spaces;

· The representation of spaces of uncertainty;

· The representation of urban alienation;

· The representation of the tension between the local/national and the global;

· The representation of spaces of nostalgia;

· Etc.

If you are unsure about your topic, please get in touch with the teaching staff on this module for additional support. The goal is to think critically about how the films illustrate cinematically the theme you choose.

You can focus on a particular scene or character from one of the films, a quote from the readings that relates to something in the film, and/or raise and explore an interesting question. Use the setting (time, place, social and historical context), story (plot, point of view), major characters and actors (gender, ethnicity, class, morality, roles, stereotype), and film elements (cinematography, editing, colour, sound, mise-en-scène) to inform. your critique.

Similar to the expectation that your written paper should be well presented, your PowerPoint is expected to be organised in a clear and logical way. Your slides should contain sufficient information without being overcrowded with all the words you say during the presentation. Your slides should be free of typographical and formatting errors. You can use some existing templates to make your PPT look more professional, but the focus should be on the content of your presentation. Please do add film stills to your slides to support your analysis. If you embed film clips in your presentation, they should be less than 1 minute long each. You should not embed more than two clips in your entire presentation.

Please include the submission form. at the end of your PPT after your reference page. Please do not state your name at the beginning of the presentation. Please save your PPT as a PDF document and submit it together with your recording. Please create a folder that contains your recording and the PDF, and submit the folder to the Box. Please DO NOT submit the individual files.

Structure of your presentation

Your presentation should contain: an introduction, a clear argument, a coherent and logical discussion and a conclusion.
